Setup
Rest the bar across your shoulders and stand wider than shoulder-width with your toes turned out. Open your chest and brace your abs so your torso stays steady.
Start phase
Drive your knees toward your toes as you lower your hips. Feel your inner thighs lengthen and keep your torso as upright as possible.
End phase
Drive through your whole foot to stand again. Keep your knees tracking outward instead of letting them collapse inward.
Target muscles
Make sure you feel strong tension in your inner thighs and glutes. It is normal for the inner-thigh work to feel more pronounced than in a regular squat.
Common mistakes
If your knees collapse inside your toes, stress on your knees rises sharply. Because your stance is wide, check every rep that your knees track with your toes.
Breathing
Inhale and brace your abs before lowering, then exhale as you rise. In a heavy set, holding your breath through the drive helps keep your torso stable.
Coach tip
Set your toe angle first, then practice driving your knees along that same line. A shallow depth is fine while you learn to keep your knees aligned.
