Learn how to perform Behind Lat Pulldown, a Back exercise, with setup, breathing and common mistakes.

Behind Lat Pulldown · Preview

STEP 1

Setup

Grip the bar, sit tall with your chest open, and gently tuck your chin so your neck doesn't jut forward. This movement requires significant shoulder mobility, so if the starting position feels uncomfortable, shorten the range or switch to a standard lat pulldown.

STEP 2

Start phase

Pull your elbows down and carefully lower the bar behind your neck. Instead of chasing depth, first find the point where your shoulder blades draw down within a comfortable range.

STEP 3

End phase

Pause briefly at the bottom, then slowly straighten your arms to return overhead. If you rush the upward phase, stress builds in your neck and the front of your shoulders, so stay calm and controlled throughout.

STEP 4

Target muscles

Pull down by engaging your lats and upper back. You should feel a clear, brief squeeze through your back with your shoulders down, while your neck stays comfortable.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

Chasing extra weight or depth, or jutting your neck forward to force the bar into place, shifts stress from your back to your neck and shoulder joints. Overarching your lower back to create range is another common mistake; shorten the range if your torso alignment breaks down.

STEP 6

Breathing

Exhale as you pull and inhale as you return. Slow, continuous breathing reduces unnecessary tension and helps you control the movement more calmly.

STEP 7

Coach tip

For this movement, comfort comes before depth. If anything feels uncomfortable, lower the weight substantially or use a standard lat pulldown instead for a safer, more effective option.
