Setup
Stand in front of a low step box and prepare to place one whole foot on it. Keep your torso upright and brace your core lightly for balance.
Start phase
Press the step box down with your elevated foot and pull your body up. Do not push off the floor with the other foot; keep the focus on the working leg.
End phase
Bring the other foot lightly onto the step box and stand tall. When stepping down, slowly lower the foot that stepped up first.
Target muscles
Feel the work in the quad and glute of the elevated leg. If you still rely heavily on the other foot at this low height, slow down.
Common mistakes
Leaning forward or using momentum to drive up takes tension away from your quads. Slow down and also check that your knee does not collapse inward.
Breathing
Exhale as you step up and inhale as you step down. Matching your breath helps you stay balanced on the step box.
Coach tip
You can add levels to increase the step-box height, so raise it one level at a time as the low height becomes easy. Alternate legs for the same number of reps to stay balanced.
