Setup
Stand with your feet wider than shoulder-width and your toes turned out. Lift your chest and reach your arms forward for balance.
Start phase
Drive your knees in the direction of your toes as you lower your hips. Feel a stretch in your inner thighs while keeping your torso upright.
End phase
Push through your whole foot to stand. Keep your knees tracking outward instead of letting them collapse inward.
Target muscles
Feel the work in your inner thighs and glutes. It is normal to feel more inner-thigh tension than in a regular squat.
Common mistakes
If your knees collapse inside your toes, knee stress increases. Prioritize foot pressure and knee direction instead of using your arms for momentum.
Breathing
Inhale before lowering to brace your core, then exhale as you rise. A steady breathing rhythm keeps your reps from becoming rushed.
Coach tip
Set your toe angle first and practice driving your knees in line with it. Once your bodyweight form is stable, loaded wide squats will feel much easier.
