STEP 1

Setup

Sit at a lat pulldown machine with your thighs secured under the knee pad and hold one handle from each of the two separate cables. With your arms reaching long overhead, open your chest and lean back slightly.

STEP 2

Start phase

Drive your elbows down toward your sides and pull the handles down beside your shoulders. Because the handles move independently, let each elbow follow its natural path to deepen the lat contraction.

STEP 3

End phase

Pause briefly at the bottom, then slowly reach back up to the starting position. Feel your lats lengthen as your hands drift slightly apart overhead, and keep your shoulders from rising toward your ears.

STEP 4

Target muscles

The key is feeling both lats contract downward with equal effort. If one arm leads or works harder, lower the weight and match the speed of both sides.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

Separate handles make it easy to pull one side first or bend your wrists to drag them down. Leaning far back with momentum shifts the work from your lats to your lower back and arms.

STEP 6

Breathing

Exhale as you pull and inhale as you reach back up. Matching your breathing to the tempo makes it easier to keep both handles moving at the same speed.

STEP 7

Coach tip

Your hands are freer than on a bar, so find a wrist angle that feels comfortable for your shoulders and keep it. Squeezing your elbows toward your torso for 1 second at the bottom makes the lower lat contraction clearer.
