Setup
Stand tall holding the handle in front of you. Keep a slight bend in your elbows and align your wrists and shoulders comfortably. The cable front raise loads the front delts from the start, so align your ribs over your pelvis before you begin to keep your back from arching.
Start phase
Slowly raise the handle to around shoulder height, thinking of the front of your shoulder lifting it. The less you lean back, the more directly you load the front delts.
End phase
Pause briefly at shoulder height, then slowly lower the handle. Lower only as far as the cable keeps tension, which makes the exercise more challenging even with a light weight.
Target muscles
Focus on the front delts lengthening and contracting in front of you. If it feels like your arms are doing all the work, lower the weight and lift from the front of your shoulders.
Common mistakes
Using momentum or shrugging shifts the work from the front delts to your back and traps. Lifting too high can irritate the front of your shoulder, so stop at a comfortable height.
Breathing
Exhale as you lift and inhale as you lower. Continuous breathing helps you keep your tempo and torso steady.
Coach tip
You do not need to raise the handle above shoulder height. Prioritize a 1-second top pause and a 2-second lowering over extra height.
