Setup
Kneel in front of the cables with both handles at shoulder height. Brace your abs and glutes to keep your torso upright. Kneeling removes lower-body momentum, so keeping your torso fixed is especially important.
Start phase
Press the handles overhead until they come naturally closer together. With your lower body out of the movement, focus on your shoulders driving the handles upward.
End phase
Pause briefly with your arms fully extended, then slowly lower the handles to shoulder height. Control the speed so the cable pull does not rock your torso forward or back.
Target muscles
This press teaches you to drive with your shoulders while lower-body momentum is blocked. If you feel only your arms working, lower the weight and think about pressing from your shoulders.
Common mistakes
Arching your back to create momentum while kneeling shifts stress from your shoulders to your lower back. If your torso rocks, brace your abs and press with your body tall and still.
Breathing
Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower. Because you cannot use your legs, breathing is even more important for maintaining torso tension.
Coach tip
The kneeling position sharply limits momentum, making shoulder tension easier to feel. Start lighter than you would standing and find a load that keeps your torso steady.
