STEP 1

Setup

Grip the cable handles and stand tall with your chest open and shoulders drawn long away from your ears. Keep your torso solid so your traps do the work.

STEP 2

Start phase

Without bending your elbows, pull your shoulders straight up toward your ears. Let the handles hang in your hands and move only your shoulders vertically.

STEP 3

End phase

Pause briefly at the highest point, then slowly lower your shoulders instead of letting the weight pull them down. The cable keeps tension on the way down, so controlling it makes the trap stretch clearer.

STEP 4

Target muscles

Focus on the muscles beside your neck lifting and lowering. If it feels like your hands are lifting the weight, loosen your grip slightly and focus only on your shoulders.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

Pulling with your arms or rolling your shoulders in circles tires your arms and neck more than your traps. Keep the back of your neck long and move only vertically; do not jut your chin forward.

STEP 6

Breathing

Exhale as you lift and inhale as you lower. Even in this short movement, steady breathing helps you keep your core engaged and control the descent.

STEP 7

Coach tip

Cable shrugs are defined more by the pause and controlled descent than by weight. A 1-second pause at the top and a 2-second controlled lowering phase can make the traps clearer at the same weight.
