Setup
Lie on the floor with your knees bent and hold the dumbbells beside your chest. Set an angle where your elbows can rest steadily on the floor, then keep your wrists and forearms straight.
Start phase
Press the dumbbells straight up. Even though the floor limits your range, keep your core braced and press both sides at the same speed.
End phase
Slowly lower the dumbbells until your elbows touch the floor. Do not bounce off the floor; pause briefly and start the next rep without momentum.
Target muscles
Think about pressing the dumbbells away with your chest and triceps. Even with the shorter range, a brief pause at the top and bottom can make the set challenging enough.
Common mistakes
Banging your elbows into the floor or pressing with bent wrists increases the impact. Before adding weight quickly, reduce the impact and keep both dumbbells traveling in the same direction.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower and exhale as you press up. Keep breathing even during the floor pause so you can maintain core tension longer.
Coach tip
Pause briefly just before your arms fully straighten and check that your chest and triceps are still working. A pause of about 0.5 seconds on the floor helps you learn the floor press's stability and force transfer.
