Setup
Set the seat, grip with one hand, and use the other to stabilize your torso. Keep the chest open and feet planted so you do not rotate.
Start phase
Press forward through one side of the chest. Brace the abs and keep the torso facing forward.
End phase
Return slowly only as far as that side of the chest lengthens. Control the lever so the shoulder does not roll forward.
Target muscles
Press with the working side of the chest. If the torso turns, lower the load and refocus on that side.
Common mistakes
Twisting or rounding the shoulder recruits the low back and shoulder before the chest. Prioritize torso stability over weight.
Breathing
Exhale on the press and inhale on the return. Keep breathing steady even when alternating sides.
Coach tip
Match the setup and speed on both sides to compare balance. If the weaker side shakes, lower the load and practice it alone.
