Setup
Adjust the seat so the handle is at shoulder height and grip it with one hand. Hold the seat or frame with your other hand to keep your torso from leaning.
Start phase
Brace your core and press the handle overhead with one arm. Keep your core firm so your torso does not shift to the opposite side.
End phase
Pause when your arm is nearly straight, then lower the handle slowly. Because one side is pressing, pay extra attention to keeping your hips still on the way down.
Target muscles
The independent movement makes side-to-side strength differences easy to notice. Match the load and reps to your weaker side to manage your balance.
Common mistakes
Working one side can pull your body to the other side or twist your lower back. Reduce the weight and stabilize your core if your torso moves.
Breathing
Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower. One-sided work can disrupt breathing, so use the same timing on every rep.
Coach tip
Start with your weaker side to manage left-right balance. On a plate-loaded machine, resistance changes at the top, so pause briefly there for stronger shoulder engagement.
