Setup
Stand tall with the dumbbells in front of your thighs using a neutral grip, palms facing each other. Raising both arms together makes momentum more likely, so brace your core and glutes to lock your torso in place first.
Start phase
Keeping your palms facing each other, raise both dumbbells forward at the same time to shoulder height. Think of the front of your shoulders lifting the dumbbells to greatly reduce momentum.
End phase
Pause briefly at shoulder height, then lower the dumbbells slowly in front of your thighs. Start the next rep before the dumbbells touch your thighs so the front delts stay under tension.
Target muscles
The palms-facing neutral grip keeps the front of your shoulders and wrists comfortably aligned. Focus on the front delts lengthening and contracting.
Common mistakes
Leaning back to use momentum when raising both arms reduces front-delt involvement. Lifting much higher than your shoulders makes you shrug, so stop around shoulder height.
Breathing
Exhale as you raise and inhale as you lower. Calm, steady breathing makes it easier to raise both arms at the same speed.
Coach tip
The neutral grip puts less stress on your wrists and the front of your shoulders, making it a good fit if front raises have felt uncomfortable. Keep a 1-second pause at the top while checking that both hands reach the same height.
