Setup
Hold the dumbbells in front of your thighs with your palms facing forward. Keep your elbows slightly bent and brace your core and glutes to stabilize your torso.
Start phase
With your palms angled up and forward, raise both dumbbells together to shoulder height. Don't swing your arms; let the front of your shoulders lift the dumbbells.
End phase
Pause briefly at shoulder height, then lower the dumbbells slowly in front of your thighs. Don't completely release tension at the bottom or bounce the dumbbells.
Target muscles
Maintain the underhand grip and use your front delts to raise your arms forward. If your biceps fatigue first, lower the weight and keep your elbow angle fixed.
Common mistakes
Leaning back to use momentum or lifting the dumbbells above shoulder height brings your lower back and traps into the movement. Keep your wrists straight and match the height of both dumbbells.
Breathing
Exhale as you raise the dumbbells and inhale as you lower them. Steady breathing makes it easier to limit torso momentum.
Coach tip
The underhand grip can make the load on your arms and front shoulders easier to feel, so use a light weight. Start with a weight that allows a 1-second pause at the top and a 2-second descent.
