Setup
Keep your back and hips against the seat, and place your feet shoulder-width apart on the platform. Because the machine is angled at 45 degrees, the load travels diagonally, so hold the handles and brace your torso.
Start phase
Drive through your whole foot to extend your legs. Press until just before your knees lock out, keeping your knees tracking in line with your toes.
End phase
Bend your knees and slowly bring the platform toward you. Only lower as far as you can without letting your pelvis tuck under.
Target muscles
Make sure your thighs and glutes are driving together. A higher foot position shifts more emphasis to the glutes, while a lower position shifts more to the front of the thighs.
Common mistakes
Chasing extra depth and letting your hips lift at the bottom puts more stress on your lower back. Prioritize keeping your pelvis fixed and your knees tracking properly over going deeper.
Breathing
Exhale as you press, and inhale as you lower. Keeping your breathing steady helps you maintain torso tension at the bottom.
Coach tip
A 45-degree machine can feel heavier than expected, so start your first set light. No matter where you place your feet, keeping your pelvis on the seat is the top priority.
