STEP 1

Setup

Stand tall with your arms straight in front and hold both ends of a band wider than shoulder-width. Open your chest and keep your shoulders down.

STEP 2

Start phase

Keeping your elbows straight, slowly separate your hands out to the sides. Move in a wide arc so the band travels in front of your chest and opens beside you.

STEP 3

End phase

Take the band behind your body, then slowly return along the same path. Control the speed and keep your shoulders from rounding forward.

STEP 4

Target muscles

Focus on your upper chest and the fronts of your shoulders opening as they lengthen. Keep tension on the band so the stretch stays connected.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

Bending your elbows or using momentum to move quickly can stress your shoulder joints. Keep tension on the band and move slowly with straight arms.

STEP 6

Breathing

Exhale as you take the band behind you and inhale as you return forward. Steady breathing can make the shoulder movement smoother.

STEP 7

Coach tip

About 10 light repetitions before your workout can help open your chest and shoulder range of motion. Choose a band light enough to move through the arc comfortably without rounding your shoulders.
