Setup
Set the seat so the handles are at upper-chest height. Keep your back down, shoulder blades lightly set, and feet firm.
Start phase
Press up and forward through the upper chest. Let the chest initiate instead of the shoulders.
End phase
Return slowly and feel the upper chest lengthen. Keep the elbows from flaring excessively.
Target muscles
Press away with the upper chest. If the shoulders take over, correct the seat and repeat.
Common mistakes
A poor seat position or wide elbows fatigue the front delts first. Set the handle start and secure the shoulder blades before loading.
Breathing
Exhale on the press and inhale on the return. Match the breathing tempo on every rep.
Coach tip
Pause at the top to check the upper chest. A brief pause at the bottom teaches a momentum-free chest start.
