Setup
Rest the bar across your upper back and stand with your feet hip-width apart. Keep your knees slightly unlocked and brace your abs and back to fix your torso in place.
Start phase
Push your hips back and hinge your torso forward. Keep your back neutral and your knee angle mostly unchanged so your hamstrings lengthen fully.
End phase
Drive your hips forward to bring your torso upright again. Do not arch your back; use your glutes to bring your torso back.
Target muscles
Feel your hamstrings lengthen and then your glutes squeeze hard. If your lower back fatigues first, you may be hinging too deep, so shorten the range.
Common mistakes
Hinging too deep or continuing to bend your knees can shift the work into your lower back. Even with a shorter range, first learn to send your hips back clearly.
Breathing
Inhale and brace your torso before hinging, then exhale as you stand. Keep your abs braced to make your back feel better and keep the movement steady.
Coach tip
Use a side-view mirror or video to check that your hips move far enough back. Consistent reps with the same technique matter much more than chasing heavier weight.
