Setup
Stand tall holding the cable handles crossed in front of you. Lower your shoulders and keep a slight bend in your elbows. This crossover setup loads the side delts from the start but also makes torso momentum easy, so brace your abs and glutes especially well.
Start phase
Open the handles to your sides and raise them to around shoulder height. Think of your elbows spreading outside your hands. Think of the side delts widening your arms to reduce trap involvement.
End phase
Pause briefly at the top, then slowly bring the handles back together in front of you. Keep resisting on the way back so the side delts stay under tension longer.
Target muscles
This crossover variation keeps the side delts loaded from start to finish. Repeat while maintaining the feeling of your shoulders widening to the sides and then coming back together.
Common mistakes
Leaning back or bracing with your traps greatly reduces side-delt tension. If your hands are at different heights, one side takes over, so prioritize symmetry over load.
Breathing
Exhale as you lift and inhale as you return. Breathing at the same pace each rep helps you stay steady against the cable pull.
Coach tip
Connect to the next rep before fully releasing the cable tension so the side delts work longer. With a light weight, a 1-second top pause and 2-second lowering are enough to make the set challenging.
