STEP 1

Setup

Attach the ankle strap, stand facing the cable machine, hold the frame or handle, and lean your torso forward. Keep your knees slightly bent and your back flat, with the working leg slightly behind you.

STEP 2

Start phase

Keeping your knee slightly bent, drive your leg back and up. Don’t use momentum from your lower back; feel your glutes drive your foot toward the ceiling.

STEP 3

End phase

Slowly bring your leg back to the starting position. Keep your glutes engaged as you lower it so the cable tension doesn’t pull it down abruptly.

STEP 4

Target muscles

Make sure your glutes squeeze briefly and strongly. If you feel it mostly in your lower back or hamstrings, keep your knee angle fixed and drive only with your glutes.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

Kicking your leg high by arching your back or using momentum increases lower-back strain and reduces glute engagement. The key is to move only your leg while keeping your torso angle fixed.

STEP 6

Breathing

Exhale as you drive your leg up and inhale as it returns. Keep your breathing steady even when you work one side at a time.

STEP 7

Coach tip

Pause for 1 second at the top to feel the glute contraction more clearly. Short, precise reps without momentum create stronger tension than a cable hip extension.
