Setup
Attach the ankle strap and stand beside the cable machine, holding the frame or handle with your opposite hand. Cross the working leg slightly in front of the other leg and stand tall.
Start phase
Push your leg out to the side in a wide arc. Lift it with your outer glute and keep your torso from leaning to the opposite side.
End phase
Slowly return your leg in front of the other leg. Control the speed while keeping your outer glute engaged so the cable tension doesn’t pull you along.
Target muscles
Make sure the outer glute (gluteus medius) of the working leg is doing the work. If you feel yourself using your torso for momentum, slightly reduce the range of motion.
Common mistakes
Leaning your torso away or rotating your pelvis shifts the glute engagement into your lower back. Prioritize a stable torso and leg path over heavier weight.
Breathing
Exhale as you move your leg out and inhale as it returns. Keep your breathing steady even when working one side at a time.
Coach tip
Pause briefly at the widest point to increase tension in your outer glute. Use the same range and speed on both sides for balance.
