Setup
Lie on the bench and grip the cable handle above your head with both hands. Bend your elbows so the handle is in front of your forehead, then position your upper arms toward the ceiling.
Start phase
Extend your elbows and press the handle toward the ceiling. Keep your upper-arm angle fixed and drive the handle to full extension with your triceps.
End phase
Bend your elbows and slowly lower the handle back in front of your forehead. Keep tension on the cable and feel your triceps lengthen.
Target muscles
Feel the entire triceps lengthen, then contract as you press. If your shoulders move first, check whether your upper arms are drifting backward.
Common mistakes
Letting your upper arms drift back or out to the sides shifts stress onto your shoulders instead of your triceps. Keep your upper arms aimed at the ceiling and move only at the elbows.
Breathing
Exhale as you press up and inhale as you lower. Steady breathing helps keep your elbows from wobbling, even while lying down.
Coach tip
The cable maintains tension even when your arms are straight. Pause for 1 second at full extension to feel the triceps contraction more precisely.
