Setup
Face away from a high pulley, step one foot forward, and lean your torso forward. Hold the attachment behind your head, keep your upper arms beside your head, and brace your torso.
Start phase
Bend your elbows and slowly lower the handle behind your head to stretch the triceps. Because the cable is pulling from above, keep your elbows from flaring out.
End phase
Straighten your elbows and press the handle back overhead. Finish with your triceps only, without letting your shoulders shrug.
Target muscles
You should feel the long head of the triceps stretch deeply at the bottom and contract firmly at the top. With the pulley set high, tension stays on the triceps longer when your arms are straight.
Common mistakes
If the cable pulls your torso too far backward, it increases stress on your lower back. Prioritize keeping your torso upright and your elbows fixed before adding weight.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower the handle and exhale as you raise it. Maintaining your breathing helps you keep your core braced in the overhead position.
Coach tip
Staggering your stance with one foot forward makes it easier to keep your torso stable. For overhead work, getting a full triceps stretch matters much more than using heavy weight, so start light.
