Setup
Hold both cable handles at chest height and step one foot forward. Start with a slight bend in your elbows, your shoulders pulled back, and your chest open.
Start phase
Keep your elbow angle fixed and slowly bring the handles together in front of your chest. Keep your shoulders from following forward, and meet the handles directly in front of your chest.
End phase
Slowly open the handles to return to the starting position. Stop just before your shoulders roll forward, when you feel your chest stretch.
Target muscles
Focus on feeling your chest draw inward. If you feel your arms doing the pulling, bend your elbows a little more and try again.
Common mistakes
Straightening your elbows or leaning your torso forward shifts the work to your arms and shoulders. Brace your abs and keep your torso steady.
Breathing
Exhale as you bring the handles together and inhale as you open them. Exhaling as you close helps you engage your chest more effectively.
Coach tip
Cables keep tension on your chest even as you open your arms. Open slowly so your chest stays engaged during the stretch.
