Setup
Stand beside a low pulley, hold the handle at shoulder height with the hand nearest the pulley, and place your other hand on your hip. Face your palm forward, keep your elbow under your wrist, and brace your abs and glutes to stand tall.
Start phase
Press the handle straight overhead until your arm is almost fully extended. Pressing with one arm makes it easy to lean to the opposite side, so keep your torso upright and think of driving from your shoulder.
End phase
Pause briefly overhead, then slowly lower the handle to shoulder height. Control the tempo so the cable pulling down does not make your arm drop.
Target muscles
Focus on the front and side delts pressing your arm upward. Your triceps join in as your arm straightens, but keep the feeling of starting the press from your shoulder.
Common mistakes
Arching your back or leaning sideways to press shifts stress from your shoulder to your lower back. If your elbow drifts far in front or out to the side, the pressing path wobbles, so keep it under your wrist.
Breathing
Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower. Exhaling while bracing your abs keeps your torso from leaning even when pressing with one arm.
Coach tip
Pressing one side at a time makes strength differences easy to spot, so start with your weaker side. The cable keeps pulling from below, so you can create plenty of shoulder tension even with a light weight.
