Setup
Stand with the bar over the middle of your feet and bring your shins close to it. Open your chest and brace your abs and back so you are ready to keep the bar against your body.
Start phase
Drive through your feet as if you are pushing the floor away to lift the bar. Keep it brushing your shins and thighs, and move your legs and torso together instead of straightening your back first.
End phase
Once the bar passes your thighs, drive your hips forward to stand tall. Do not lean back; finish when your knees and hips are fully extended.
Target muscles
Make sure your glutes, hamstrings, and entire back work together. If it feels like you are pulling with your arms, keep them as hooks and focus on driving with your legs and hips.
Common mistakes
A bar that drifts away or a rounded back sharply increases lower-back stress. Prioritize keeping the bar close and your back braced over adding weight.
Breathing
Take a deep breath and brace your torso before pulling, then exhale after you stand fully. Reset your breath for every rep instead of rushing into the next one.
Coach tip
Think about pushing the floor hard with your feet rather than pulling the bar. The key is keeping the bar close enough to lightly brush your shins.
