Setup
Lie on the bench and hold the EZ bar over your chest. Use a wrist-friendly grip and keep your elbows slightly bent.
Start phase
Slowly move the EZ bar behind your head. Keep your chest lifted and control the movement so your shoulders do not round excessively.
End phase
Use your lats and chest to bring the EZ bar back over your chest. Follow the same path up without changing your elbow angle much.
Target muscles
Think about pulling the EZ bar with your chest and lats. If your arms are doing the lifting, bend your elbows a little more and pull it back with your chest.
Common mistakes
Lowering the weight too far increases stress on the front of your shoulders. Brace your abs so your back stays down, and lower only through a comfortable range.
Breathing
Inhale as the bar moves down and exhale as you bring it back up. Move slowly and keep your breathing steady.
Coach tip
Even with the EZ bar's wrist-friendly angle, keep the movement slow. Do not swing straight into the next rep; reset briefly over your chest.
