STEP 1

Setup

Set the bench to 30~45 degrees and hold two dumbbells pressed together in front of your upper chest. Set your shoulder blades back and create inward pressure between the dumbbells.

STEP 2

Start phase

Slowly lower the dumbbells toward the area below your collarbones while keeping them together. Keep your elbows close to your torso and stop within a comfortable range where your upper chest stretches.

STEP 3

End phase

Press the dumbbells up and slightly forward while continuing to press them together. Keep your torso against the backrest so your shoulders do not rise with the weight.

STEP 4

Target muscles

Think about pressing with your upper chest while drawing both sides of your chest inward. If your shoulders fatigue first, lower the bench angle and the weight.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

A bench that is too upright or dumbbells that separate turns the movement into a shoulder press. Keep the bench at 45 degrees or less and maintain contact between the dumbbells throughout.

STEP 6

Breathing

Inhale as you lower and exhale as you press up. Press the dumbbells inward as you exhale to maintain tension in your upper chest.

STEP 7

Coach tip

Start with a lighter weight than a regular incline press and learn the inward pressure first. A 1-second pause at the top makes it easier to check your chest contraction.
