Setup
Place both hands shoulder-width apart on a stable, non-slip step box. Keep your feet on the floor and your body straight from head to heels.
Start phase
Bend your elbows about 45 degrees from your torso and lower slowly toward the step box. Move your body as one unit without resting your chest on the box.
End phase
Push through both hands against the step box to return to the start. Keep your lower back from sagging and your hips from rising first.
Target muscles
Think about pushing the support away with your chest. If you feel only your arms working, keep your elbows closer to your torso and try again.
Common mistakes
Do not use a wobbling box or arch your lower back. Check that the box cannot slide and stop lowering before chest contact.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower and exhale as you push up. Exhaling as you push helps you keep your core braced.
Coach tip
A lower step box puts more body weight through your arms. Start at a height where you can keep your torso straight.
