Setup
Adjust the seat so your elbows rest naturally at the center of the pads, then open your chest and lower your shoulders. Precise alignment matters because a loose setup lets your traps take over.
Start phase
Raise the pads to the sides by thinking of your elbows widening up and out rather than pushing with your hands. Keep the feeling of your side delts opening your arms even along the fixed path.
End phase
Pause around shoulder height, then lower the pads slowly. Stop before the machine's pull completely releases so your side delts keep working.
Target muscles
This machine makes it easy to focus on side-delt tension without balancing the weight. Repeat with the feeling of your shoulders widening out and returning.
Common mistakes
Shrugging or lifting your torso lets your traps and momentum take over. Use only a comfortable height instead of forcing the pads higher with more weight.
Breathing
Exhale as you raise and inhale as you lower. Steady breathing makes the top pause and controlled descent easier.
Coach tip
On a machine lateral raise, the top pause and descent speed matter more than load. Fix your tempo first; a light weight can still make your side delts burn.
