Setup
Stand beside the machine with your elbow or hand against the pad. Hold the frame with your other hand so your torso does not lean.
Start phase
Raise your arm to the side using your side delt. Because standing makes momentum easy, keep your lower body firmly planted.
End phase
Pause around shoulder height, then lower slowly. Control the descent so the machine's pull does not move you.
Target muscles
Standing lets your side delt work through a natural range of motion. Lower your shoulders and try again if your traps take over.
Common mistakes
Leaning or using momentum greatly reduces side-delt engagement. Start with a light weight and precise movement before adding load.
Breathing
Exhale as you raise your arm and inhale as you lower it. Exhaling as you lift can help keep your torso steady.
Coach tip
This movement makes side-to-side differences easy to notice. Build your sets around the weaker side for more balanced shoulders.
