Setup
Lie on a bench and hold the dumbbells above your forehead. Point your elbows toward the ceiling and keep your shoulders on the bench.
Start phase
Bend your elbows and lower the dumbbells slowly beside your forehead. Keep your elbows at the same width instead of letting them flare.
End phase
Extend your elbows with your triceps and lift the dumbbells. Keep your elbows fixed as your triceps finish the press.
Target muscles
Think of extending your elbows with your triceps. If your shoulders take over, check that the dumbbells are not traveling too far behind you.
Common mistakes
Lowering the dumbbells too far behind your shoulders increases shoulder strain. Control the range beside your forehead.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower and exhale as you lift. Breathe with the rep to keep your elbows steady.
Coach tip
Do not let the dumbbells touch at the top; keep tension in your triceps. That keeps the whole set more effective.
