Setup
Set the incline, stand in the center of the belt, and lift your chest. Touch the handles lightly only when you need balance, and look forward.
Start phase
Walk or run with a soft heel-first landing. Shorten your stride slightly compared with level ground and feel your glutes drive you uphill.
End phase
Gradually lower the incline and speed to finish. End with level walking to settle your heart rate.
Target muscles
Your glutes and hamstrings work much harder than on level ground. Shorten your stride and land with your whole foot if your calves take over.
Common mistakes
Pulling hard on the handles and leaning back greatly reduces the benefit of incline work. Lower the incline by one or two levels if your form breaks down.
Breathing
Inhale and exhale deeply with your walking rhythm. Because incline work can speed your breathing, focus on making your exhale longer.
Coach tip
Raising the incline greatly increases your heart rate and calorie use at the same speed. Start around a 5–8% incline and increase it only while you can maintain your form.
