Setup
Sit on the floor with your knees bent and lean your upper body slightly back. Keep your chest open and brace your core while finding an angle where your back does not round.
Start phase
With your hands together, slowly rotate your torso to one side. Do not swing your arms; rotate your ribs and check that your obliques tighten.
End phase
Pass through center and rotate to the other side at the same speed. Keep your pelvis as still as possible and make the upper-body rotation clear.
Target muscles
Keeping your pelvis fixed while rotating your torso increases oblique engagement more than using a large range. Bring your arms closer to your body if you cannot feel your sides.
Common mistakes
Moving too fast or rounding your back strains your lower back. Start with a small range and maintain alignment and core tension first.
Breathing
Exhale as you rotate and inhale as you return to center. Using the exhale makes it easier to feel your obliques tighten.
Coach tip
It is fine to keep your feet on the floor at first. Lift them slightly only after your alignment is stable.
