Setup
Sit on a bench with a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, keeping your back tall and bracing your abs. You will alternate sides, so stabilize your seated position first to keep your body from shifting away from the working side.
Start phase
Raise one dumbbell out to shoulder height while keeping the other at your side. Think of the lifting elbow leading up and out ahead of your hand to load the side delt.
End phase
Slowly lower the raised arm as you lift the opposite arm, continuing to alternate. Control each descent and keep the rhythm steady.
Target muscles
Working one side delt at a time makes it easier to clearly feel both sides. Check that both sides move to the same height and at the same speed as you alternate.
Common mistakes
Leaning away from the working side to use momentum reduces the side-delt tension. A faster alternating rhythm creates more momentum, so deliberately slow down.
Breathing
Exhale on the lifting side and inhale as you lower. Keep your breathing timing consistent as you alternate to reduce torso movement.
Coach tip
Alternating gives you more time to focus on each side, making the tension easier to feel. Match the weight and reps to your weaker side to improve left-to-right balance.
