Side Lateral Raise · Preview

STEP 1

Setup

Stand tall with the dumbbells at your sides, slightly bend your elbows, and keep your wrists straight. Small amounts of momentum can greatly change the tension in a lateral raise, so brace your core and glutes to lock your torso in place first.

STEP 2

Start phase

Raise the dumbbells out to the sides, thinking of your elbows traveling up and out before your hands. Focus on your side delts spreading your arms outward rather than lifting higher to reduce trap involvement.

STEP 3

End phase

Pause briefly around shoulder height, then lower the dumbbells slowly. Controlling the descent instead of dropping the dumbbells makes the side-shoulder tension much stronger, even with a light weight.

STEP 4

Target muscles

This is one of the most direct ways to feel your side delts spreading your arms away from your body. If it feels like your hands are doing the work, lower the weight and lead with your elbows again.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

Swaying your body or bending your wrists as you raise the dumbbells reduces side-delt involvement. Lifting above your shoulders brings in too much trap, so stop at a height that feels comfortable for your shoulders.

STEP 6

Breathing

Exhale as you raise and inhale as you lower. Even in this short-range movement, steady breathing helps limit momentum and keep your speed consistent.

STEP 7

Coach tip

Your side delts respond more to speed control than to heavy weight. The right weight for you now is one that allows a 1-second pause at the top and a 2-second descent.
