Setup
Gradually raise the belt speed and stand in the center. Look forward and keep your arms comfortably bent.
Start phase
Take short, quick steps while looking ahead rather than down at your feet. Keep your torso tall and swing your elbows naturally.
End phase
Lower the speed gradually to finish. Transition to walking until your breathing settles.
Target muscles
Use your glutes and hamstrings along with your calves. Run with the feeling of pushing the ground backward.
Common mistakes
Holding the front of the belt or reaching your feet too far forward increases impact. Shorten your stride so you land close beneath your body.
Breathing
Breathe in a steady rhythm, such as once every two or three steps. Do not suddenly change your breathing pattern as your pace rises.
Coach tip
Transition to running after a walking warm-up instead of starting fast. Your running posture and rhythm will build more steadily.
