Setup
Set the treadmill to a very low speed and stand in the center of the belt. Lightly hold the handles, look forward, and lengthen your torso.
Start phase
Step carefully backward one foot at a time with the belt. Keep your steps short and place your whole foot down smoothly without dragging it.
End phase
Lower the speed further and gradually shorten your steps. Once fully stable, turn around to face forward or step off the treadmill.
Target muscles
Backward walking uses your quads, glutes, and calves in a different rhythm than regular walking. Notice your core keeping your torso upright as you balance.
Common mistakes
Increasing the speed quickly or pulling hard on the handles disrupts your balance and rhythm. Looking down at your feet can make your torso sway, so keep the speed low and steps short.
Breathing
This unfamiliar movement can make you hold your breath, so exhale fully every few steps. Keep a comfortable tempo without letting your breathing stop.
Coach tip
Start with a short 1–2 minutes and learn stability while holding the handles. If your knees or balance feel uncomfortable, reduce the speed and time or switch to regular treadmill walking.
