Setup
Anchor the band at a low point behind you and hold the handle with both hands overhead. Bend your elbows so the handle sits behind your head, keeping your elbows close beside your ears.
Start phase
Straighten your elbows to press the handle overhead. As the band tension increases, keep your elbows from flaring out.
End phase
Bend your elbows to slowly lower the handle behind your head. Lower only until you feel your triceps stretch.
Target muscles
Notice your triceps stretch and then contract. If your shoulders take over, check that your elbows are not flaring out.
Common mistakes
Leaning back or flaring your elbows shifts the load from your triceps to your lower back and shoulders. Brace your core and keep your elbows close beside your ears.
Breathing
Exhale as you press up and inhale as you lower. Do not hold your breath as the band tension increases.
Coach tip
The band gets tighter as your arms extend, so keep tension through the top. Staggering your stance can make it easier to keep your torso steady.
