Setup
Hold the cable handles from a low position and step one foot forward. Start with a slight bend in your elbows and your chest open.
Start phase
Keep your elbow angle fixed and bring the handles diagonally from low to high. Keep your shoulders from rising, and lift with the feeling of stretching your upper chest.
End phase
Slowly lower the handles back to the starting position. Reverse direction just before your shoulders roll forward, when you feel a stretch across your upper chest.
Target muscles
Think about bringing the handles up with your upper chest. If you feel only your shoulders working, lower the starting position slightly and try again.
Common mistakes
Leaning back or raising the handles too high shifts the work to your shoulders and lower back. Keep your torso still and maintain a consistent diagonal path.
Breathing
Exhale as you lift and inhale as you lower. Exhaling as you bring the handles together helps you engage your upper chest.
Coach tip
With a low cable fly, connecting with your upper chest matters more than the exact handle height. Raise the handles only as high as you can feel your upper chest working.
