Setup
Sit on an incline bench and hold both cable handles. Slightly bend your elbows, pull your shoulders back, and open your upper chest.
Start phase
Keep your elbow angle fixed and bring the handles together in front of your upper chest. Pull with your upper chest while keeping your shoulders from drifting forward.
End phase
Slowly open the handles to return to the starting position. Stop just before your shoulders roll forward, when you feel your upper chest stretch.
Target muscles
Pull your elbows inward so your upper chest comes together. If you feel your arms doing the pulling, bend your elbows a little more and try again.
Common mistakes
If the bench angle is too steep, your shoulders fatigue before your chest. Keep the bench at 45 degrees or lower and maintain the same elbow angle throughout.
Breathing
Exhale as you bring the handles together and inhale as you open them. Exhaling as you close helps you engage your upper chest more effectively.
Coach tip
Keeping your back against the bench reduces shoulder involvement. If your upper body shifts forward, lower the weight and fix your form first.
