Setup
Stand sideways with both hands on the cable and your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your pelvis facing mostly forward and brace your core to prepare to rotate your torso.
Start phase
Don't pull with your arms; rotate your ribs and torso together as you bring the handle to the side. Move with your obliques controlling the motion so the cable resistance doesn't pull you off balance.
End phase
Slowly return to center and accept the cable resistance again. Keep the same range of motion and speed on the other side without letting your pelvis open too far.
Target muscles
Your obliques should control the rotation, the stop, and the return. If you don't feel your sides working, lower the weight and slow the return.
Common mistakes
Swinging only your arms or rotating your pelvis with your torso weakens core engagement. Lower the weight if needed and first separate torso rotation from a stable pelvis.
Breathing
Exhale as you rotate your torso and inhale as you return to center. Using your exhale can make it easier to feel your obliques tighten more deeply.
Coach tip
Start with an angle where you can resist the cable and stop without chasing a big range. Reps you can stop slowly are much more effective than fast rotations.
