Setup
Lie on a decline bench, secure your legs, and hold the dumbbells beside your lower chest. Set your shoulder blades back, lift your chest, and brace your core and lower body so you do not slide down.
Start phase
Press the dumbbells straight up. Keep your elbows close to your torso and press in the same direction so the dumbbells do not drift toward your stomach.
End phase
Slowly lower the dumbbells and feel your lower chest lengthen. Keep your chest open so your shoulders do not round forward, and control the descent.
Target muscles
Think of pressing the dumbbells up with your lower chest. If your triceps are doing all the work, keep your elbows closer to your torso and try again.
Common mistakes
Overextending your neck or letting the dumbbells drift too low can quickly break your position. It is much safer to prioritize a stable body and consistent dumbbell path over heavier weight.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower and brace your core, then exhale slowly as you press. On a decline bench, it is especially important to keep your breathing and core engaged so you do not slide.
Coach tip
Pause briefly at the lowest point, then press up slowly. If you cannot feel your lower chest working, lower the weight and make the descent slower.
