Setup
Grip the parallel bars and lift your body with straight arms. Lean your upper body slightly forward for your chest and press your shoulders down to create a stable position.
Start phase
Bend your elbows and lower slowly. Feel the lower chest stretch, but stop before your shoulders start to roll forward.
End phase
Press the handles strongly down to come up. Think about pushing your whole body up with your lower chest rather than simply straightening your arms.
Target muscles
Think about driving your body up with your lower chest. If you feel only your triceps, lean your upper body a little farther forward and try again.
Common mistakes
If you stay too upright or let your shoulders roll forward, your triceps and shoulders will tire before your chest. Keep the forward lean and prevent your shoulders from rounding.
Breathing
Take a deep breath as you lower and exhale as you rise. A steady breath helps keep your position from shifting throughout the set.
Coach tip
A greater forward lean increases chest tension. However, leaning too far can bother your shoulders, so find an angle that suits you.
