Setup
Set the cables high, hold the handles with both hands, and step one foot forward. Keep the handles beside your chest, slightly bend your elbows, and open your chest.
Start phase
Press the handles down and forward on a diagonal. Think about pressing with your lower chest and keep your elbows close to your torso.
End phase
Slowly return the handles to the starting position. Stop just before your shoulders roll forward, when you feel your lower chest stretch.
Target muscles
Think about pressing the handles down with your lower chest. If you feel only your arms working, lower the weight and reestablish the diagonal path.
Common mistakes
Leaning your torso forward or pressing straight ahead reduces the lower-chest tension. Brace your abs and maintain the downward diagonal path.
Breathing
Exhale as you press and inhale as you return. Exhaling through the press helps you drive more force through your lower chest.
Coach tip
Pausing briefly before fully extending your arms keeps your lower chest working longer. The higher the cable, the steeper the diagonal, so find the angle that fits you.
