Setup
Lie on your side with your legs slightly stacked and one hand lightly behind your head. Keep your lower side on the floor and prepare to curl your torso sideways.
Start phase
Tighten your upper oblique and curl your upper body a short distance. Do not pull your head; let your side fold so your shoulder lifts from the floor.
End phase
Lower your upper body slowly to the start. Keep your oblique engaged and control the speed until just before you touch down.
Target muscles
Focus on the short fold in your upper oblique rather than lifting high. Cut your speed in half if you cannot feel the side working.
Common mistakes
Pulling your head or bouncing your torso strains your neck. Even a small range is fine if your oblique alone lifts your upper body.
Breathing
Exhale as you curl up and inhale as you lower. A long exhale helps your side tighten more deeply.
Coach tip
Place your opposite hand on your side to feel the muscle tighten. Use the same number of reps on both sides.
