STEP 1

Setup

Hold an underhand-grip handle with one hand and stand at an angle beside the cable machine. Keep your elbow close to your body and your shoulder down as you begin.

STEP 2

Start phase

Using your elbow as the pivot, press the handle down and slightly forward. Brace your opposite side as well so your torso does not rotate.

STEP 3

End phase

Slowly raise the handle and bend your elbow. Return under tension without letting your shoulder shrug.

STEP 4

Target muscles

You should independently feel the triceps on that side stretch and contract. If you grip too hard with your wrist, your forearm will fatigue first, so focus on the elbow movement.

STEP 5

Common mistakes

Twisting your torso as you press makes your lower back and shoulder work before your triceps. Even if you lower the weight, establish a stable upper body first.

STEP 6

Breathing

Exhale as you press and inhale as you return. Steady breathing keeps the movement controlled even when training one side at a time.

STEP 7

Coach tip

Use the same starting height and torso angle on both sides so you can accurately compare the difference in tension. Checking your elbow position in a mirror makes it easier to stay balanced side to side.
