Setup
Lean back against the backrest and adjust the seat so your knee axis lines up with the machine's pivot. Set the pad just above your ankles and hold the handles so your pelvis stays down.
Start phase
Raise the pad by straightening your knees. Lift slowly without momentum, then briefly squeeze the front of your thighs at the top.
End phase
Slowly lower while keeping tension in the front of your thighs. Resist all the way down so the plate weight doesn't drop you abruptly.
Target muscles
Make sure you feel a strong squeeze in the front of your thighs. Plate-loaded machines often provide more resistance at the top, so focus on squeezing at the peak.
Common mistakes
Leaning back or kicking the weight up with momentum increases stress on your knees. Even if you lower the weight, prioritize knee-axis alignment and a slow tempo.
Breathing
Exhale as you lift and inhale as you lower. Keep breathing continuously even though the movement is short.
Coach tip
The resistance curve differs from a pin-loaded machine, so the same weight may feel different. Prioritize controlling the range over chasing heavier weight.
