Setup
Place your hands slightly narrower than shoulder-width and make your body a straight line. Brace your core and glutes to keep your torso from sagging, and keep your elbows close to your sides.
Start phase
Bend your elbows close to your torso as you slowly lower. Lower your whole body together while keeping your triceps working.
End phase
Push the floor away with your triceps to rise. Finish by straightening your arms with your triceps, rather than letting your shoulders lead.
Target muscles
Think about pushing the floor away with your triceps. If you feel it mostly in your chest, bring your elbows closer to your torso and rise slowly.
Common mistakes
If your hips lift or your elbows flare, the movement becomes a regular push-up. Prioritize a straight body line and proper elbow direction over rep count.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower and exhale as you rise. Steady breathing makes it much easier to keep your torso braced.
Coach tip
You can practice from your knees at first with the same elbow path. Find a narrow hand position that feels comfortable for your wrists instead of bringing your hands so close that they bend.
