Setup
Stand beside the cable tower, extend your near arm at shoulder height to hold the tower, and grab the low pulley handle across the front of your body with your outside hand. Use the arm on the tower to keep your body upright, and start with the handle in front of your thigh.
Start phase
Keep a slight bend in your elbow and raise the handle out to the side up to shoulder height. The hand on the tower stops your torso from leaning, so focus only on the side delt opening your arm outward.
End phase
Pause briefly at shoulder height, then slowly lower the handle back in front of your thigh. Lowering only until just before the cable tension fully releases flows naturally into the next rep.
Target muscles
Focus on the side delt lifting your arm. With your torso fixed, it is easy to check that only the side delt is working without momentum.
Common mistakes
Pulling or pushing on the tower to lean your body creates momentum instead of support. Raising above shoulder height or shrugging brings in too much trap, so stop at shoulder height.
Breathing
Exhale as you lift and inhale as you lower. Calm, continuous breathing helps you keep your speed against the cable pull.
Coach tip
Your body is more firmly fixed than in a regular cable side lateral raise, making it easier to hold your form through the last rep. Build a 1-second top pause with a light weight and match both sides to the weaker side's reps.
