Setup
Grip the bar and lean your torso just slightly forward. Keep your elbows tucked beside your torso and your shoulders down so your triceps take the load immediately.
Start phase
Press the handle down as you extend your elbows. Keep your elbows from drifting forward or back and drive to the bottom with your triceps.
End phase
Bend your elbows as you slowly let the handle rise. Return under control without losing the tension in your triceps as your arms come up.
Target muscles
Feel your triceps contract briefly at full extension and lengthen as the handle rises. If your elbows flare, the movement becomes a shoulder press, so keep them tucked by your sides.
Common mistakes
Shrugging or leaning your torso far forward makes your body do the work before your triceps. Lower the weight if needed and first establish fixed elbows with a complete pressdown.
Breathing
Exhale as you press down and inhale as you return. Keeping your breathing steady also stabilizes your elbow movement.
Coach tip
If you don’t completely release tension as your arms rise, the tension stays in your triceps. Rather than rushing short reps, use the full range: let your elbows bend well past 90 degrees, then extend fully.
